Analysis and re-design of institutional career site
with design system implementation.
Design system implementation • Heuristics • Re-design user flowsWhat is the Career Service website?
Career Service is a platform provided by Politecnico di Milano to help students and alumni connect with job opportunities, internships, and employers, both in Italy and internationally. It offers various services such as job postings, career counseling and professional development activities. It's also designed to help students navigate the job market by providing support with CV writing, interview preparation, and other career-related resources.
What I learned
This project let me to better understand heuristics, how to identify them and apply them correctly by conducting site audits. Understanding who our user is and what flows each of them do is something that in my opinion helps a lot as well to see how the site is working and if it covers all the their needs.
Tools:
Figma - for wireframing, design, and design system libraries.
Responsibilities:
UX + research
Heuristics analysis
UI re-design
Information Architecture
Design System Libraries (component creation + publishment)

1. Research & Analysis
The project started by conducting a competitor analysis of other platforms that give related services to the one of Politecnico. The analysis considered four main points which include: UI graphics, Networking interactions, Job applications page, and profile page.
After interacting with the website, we could also understand some usability problems that were occuring within and let us highlight them to work further on in the project.
The user personas were developed with their unique characteristics and understood through the elaboration of empathy maps. The empathy maps let us indicate the painpoints our user personas could experiment while using the career service and this resulted in the definition of different tasks.
According to the interaction all users had with the website, three main tasks were selected from the matrix. The objective is to analyze and re-define the way users navigate through each task within the website.
2. Redesign
Our goal is to enhance the information structure by:
- Streamlining navigation,
- Prioritizing content hierarchy,
- Personalizing user experiences.
We propose a dynamic dashboard that highlights personalized job recommendations, events, and updates, supported by intuitive navigation and advanced search filters. Clear categorization and visual cues will improve usability, while a responsive, user-friendly layout ensures accessibility and inclusivity. This approach aims to make the platform engaging, efficient, and tailored to students' and alumni's diverse career needs.
From the previous problems and defined goals, we were able to redesign the career service website. Politecnico has been making changes to their insitutional websites and have been using Microsoft’s Fluent Design System. To give coherence to the relationship that exists between the Career Service and Politecnico, we took the design system library as a base to change the UI and work in the user flows.
The process consisted of first re-defining the site’s Information Architecture to then continue with the wireframes of the screens needed for the tasks from the Task Matrix.
The tasks are: Browse through the job-board, event registration, and View/edit profile.
